Oswaldo Ruiz-Chiriboga’s main fields of academic interest include international human rights law, inter-American human rights law, indigenous peoples’ rights, and legal philosophy. His research, teaching and publications fall broadly in these areas. Prior to embarking on an academic career, Oswaldo worked as Senior Legal Officer at the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), one of the leading NGOs in the Americas in the litigation of human rights abuses before the Inter-American System of Human Rights. Oswaldo also worked as Senior Legal Officer at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the autonomous judicial institution of the Organization of American States.
Alongside his academic work, Oswaldo is a member of the roster of independent experts of the Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism (MICI) of the Inter-American Development Bank, member of the Editorial Committee of the Inter-American and European Human Rights Journal, and member of the Group PRUJULA (Latin-American Legal Pluralism).
Oswaldo has been awarded a number of fellowships and grants to pursue his academic career, including the Ghent University Research Fund (BOF), the Research Foundation of Flanders (FWO), the Netherlands Organization for the International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
As to Oswaldo’s service to the international community, he is the founder and administrator of the first blog in Spanish reporting on the decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the academic publications related to it (corteidhblog.blospot.com).
