Simon Rippon is a philosopher specializing in moral and political philosophy, with interests in metaethics, bioethics, philosophy of public policy, and epistemology. He was recently part of the 3 year ETHOS project (Towards a European Theory of Justice and Fairness) , funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme. He is currently continuing research from that project on the methodology of non-ideal political theory, and how to take into account conflicting attitudes in democracies. He also has interests in propaganda and the epistemology of democracy.
He has been teaching in the Departments of Philosophy and Public Policy at CEU since 2012. He received his PhD in philosophy at Harvard, where he worked on metaethical and epistemological issues relating to the question of how there can be knowable moral truths. Between 2009 and 2012 he was a post doctoral fellow in bioethics at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics in the University of Oxford, a junior research fellow at Somerville College, and a tutor at Oriel College. He is also a former Graduate Fellow of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
He is as an elected senior faculty representative on the CEU Senate. As a Senate member, he welcomes questions and representations on Senate matters from any member of the CEU community.
He is a member of the OSUN Human Subject Research Ethics Review Board, and previously served as a member of the CEU Ethical Research Committee 2013-2022, as Chair 2020-2022.
